Its focus, having earlier turned from the yellow to the white metal, now shift- ed to the red metal after Butte’s copper discoverer Marcus Daly selected the site of Anaconda for his smelter in 1883. That town grew to be both larger and more economically significant than Deer Lodge, and pressure began in the 1890s to transfer the county seat at Deer Lodge to Anaconda. After sev- eral years of political maneuvering, a county-wide vote was taken in 1896 which Anaconda carried. The county records were removed to Anaconda The Bob Marshall wilderness,“The Bob”, located in Powell County, ranges in altitudes of 4,000 to 9,000 feet. The Chinese Wall averages 1,000 feet high and extends for 22 miles. The area is replete with waterfalls, lakes, and dense forests. It’s also a prime habitat for grizzly bear, moose, elk, black bear, bighorn sheep, mountain goat, mountain lion, lynx, wolf, and wolverine. 98
