Places of Interest on The Meyer Company Ranch The Meyer Company Ranch, including both owned and leased land, cur- rently totals over 33,500 acres, or a bit over 52 square miles. To give a more readily understood idea of that size, if it were the shape of a square it would be 7.25 miles on a side - but of course its actual shape on the map is nothing that simple. There are places where you could walk ten miles in a straight line, or even fifteen miles in the same general direction, without leaving land under the Meyer jurisdiction. However, in a few places, the property is only a mile to 1/2 mile wide. Also, it is geographically split into two separate parts: the Wales or northern sector, and the larger southern sector, which includes the headquarters area. The Wales Ranch land comprises a third of the total owned and leased acreage, the southern sector the rest. If we add in the 2x2-mile area sur- rounding the headquarters complex, this 4-square mile area, separated from the Wales section by the Bignell and Coughlin ranches, but functionally linked by public road, and then deduct several square miles of hilly forested land west and north of Wales Creek Reservoir, we are left with very roughly 30 percent of the total as the core area of the Ranch activities. 156
