The roots of Robert E. Meyer’s family and upbringing was in agricul- ture. Though later he became successful in California real estate, he never lost sight of his rural background. By 1990, Bob was able to realize his dream of starting a ranching enterprise - not a “dude ranch” as many others have done, but a working cattle ranch. A prominent trade publication described the operations of the Ranch as “an integrated ranch-to-retail beef business, utilizing quality genetics and practical management, along with feeding and meat processing capability, to merchandise a branded product answering con- sumer demand for consistancy and uniformity.” As an outdoor enthusiast who had hunted and fished in Montana, Meyer was already familiar with the region and began looking for a location to put his vision into practice. He found it in the mountain-girt lower Nevada / upper Blackfoot Valley. In 1990, he acquired the 6,300-acre Wales Brothers’ ranch on the Blackfoot, a spread with a history going back to 1881 and whose core acreage had been owned by Wales family members during that entire period.
