To return to the Ranch, this last touches on another point. Having cattle forage in a natural way, as much as possible on wild-growing grasses, gives the animals exercise which helps to keep their fat at natural levels. In winter, especially late winter when grass forage in the Nevada Valley may be scarce, it can be supplemented with feed crops such as alfalfa grown on the Ranch and known to be wholesome. A less quantifiable, but undoubtedly important aspect of the way cattle are raised on the Ranch, is the general treatment of its animals. Once more, we’ll let the Ranch management speak for itself. The Meyer philosophy of producing a premium quality product could not be achieved without an ethical attitude towards the land and the animals. Meyer has proved that responsible land stewardship and humane animal treatment is not only good for the environment, it’s good for business. The Ranch restores riparian areas through stream bank stabili- zation and fencing, and cattle are grazed below the carrying capacity of the land.
