Although the Meyer Natural Angus program has grown well beyond the point where all the animals can be raised soley on the Ranch itself, the Ranch operations are key to the program and its 15 percent total share of cattle used. The animals that are raised on the Ranch set the example for the over forty independent ranchers from whom it buys home-raised cattle for the program. The ranches from whom Meyer Natural Angus purchases calves are located in Montana, Wyoming, both Dakotas, Nebraska, Utah, and California. The Ranchers must certify that their animals are at least fifty percent Red or Black Angus and that their cattle raising and management practices conform to the Meyer Natural Angus guidelines including no administration of antibiotics or hormones to the animals. This is not so hard to achieve since some independent ranchers have their animals graze and feed naturally even though they are not paid to do so.
