blackfoot-valley

How was this land created and who came before me? How did they survive? Questions pondered as I appreciated the incredible natural beauty of this land and how lucky to be a part of its heritage. The author, Lee Madland, Professor of Geology, spent 1997 to 2001 researching Montana’s Nevada / Blackfoot Valleys; the geology, cli- mate, native people, pioneer families, and culture. His explorations were in depth including interviews with the descendants of some of the original pioneer settlers. The book is showing that there were many enterprises tried, such as timbering, farming, mining, open range ranching, by the pioneers. And then with time there was an evolution of failed enterprises, not natural for the area, evolving to today’s successful ranching, that employ sustainable business practices. 2
